Tonight is our "Parent's Night Out" event at Bouncing Off the Walls!! The event is open to only Jewell families. 15% of sales will be donated back to Jewell Elementary. Children 4 years old and older can be dropped off after parents signing a waiver and checking in their child. Times are 6pm-9pm and $7 a child. Use it at a date night or time to shop without kids or having to pay a babysitter!!

Read-A-Thon Fall Fundraiser

The Read-A-Thon fall fundraiser has begun! We are so excited to provide a fundraiser that supports our students learning and 100% off profits benefit the students and teachers of RE Jewell Elementary. Fundraisers that offer things for sale only return a portion of the profits to the school.

Students should return their pledge sheets Monday, October 31st. Reading begins Tuesday, November 1st. Every student will receive a book and a bookmark at school that day and will bring home their Book Tracking Form. Please refer to the Instructional Timeline page about what a "book" should be. Students will have 13 days to read and will return their form on Monday, November 14th.

Thank you for supporting the students and staff at RE Jewell! Fundraisers have allowed the PTA to purchase computers for the computer lab, Smart Boards for classrooms, teacher stipends, give students field trips and many other things.

Welcome back to another wonderful year at Jewell Elementary!!

The PTA is so excited about the upcoming year and all of our opportunities. We want to encourage all of you to come to the meetings, get involved, sign up on a committee to volunteer, feel free to express yourself and share your ideas! The PTA has a bulletin board inside the main lobby. Please stop and check it out as we will leave updates and our calendar.

We encourage questions and comments as well as suggestions for things you want to talk about or learn more about in our school. The Fall Fundraiser is one of our main fundraisers – be on the lookout for these materials coming home with your son/daughter in the next few weeks. This year we have chosen to have a well respected Catalog order with giftwrap and goodies where we can make a 55% profit. For more information on how our fundraisers help, come to our meetings as we discuss the use of funds.

Our first meeting on Sept. 15^th was a success, a HUGE thanks to our new Principal, Josh Boehme, for the update and answering a bunch of questions! It was so nice to meet everyone that was able to make it… hoping to meet many more of you at our next meeting on Thurs. October 20, at 6 pm in the media center. School aged childcare will be provided.

If you want to join and haven’t had that opportunity, you can always pick up a membership form at the school, online, or at our next meeting. The dues are only $15 a year. Become a PTA member today and HAVE YOUR VOICE HEARD at your child’s school!! THANKS for all of your continued support!

I have personally enjoyed this year's meetings - as we've brought specialists from Jewell in to present brief programs at the beginning of each meeting. They have been very informative, and have given the PTA an opportunity to ask questions and learn about programs that are important to our children's success.

The next few programs are no exception:

February 10th: Christy Lansing will share our counseling program with parents, along with various programs she provides to students in the areas of counseling, behavior, character, child abuse & safety, and coordination of counseling services with community agencies and counselors in private practice.

TUESDAY March 15th (day change, mark your calendar): Bruce Reynolds will share the 2011-12 school budget and potential staffing plan for next year with parents.

April 14th: Collin Brooks will share information from his attendance at the National Physical Education conference in San Diego, the awards ceremony where we received the STAR award, and the design of the P.E. program at Jewell as correlated to Oregon State Standards and benchmarks.

The May 12th meeting program topic is to be determined.

We need hundreds of parent volunteers to make this a successful and safe carnival (and keep all rooms open all night, and look forward to seeing all of your faces there!)

Carnival Corporate Sponsors, and donations to our Raffle/Auction

There are links here to 3 forms for you to print out and help circulate. The first is a Corporate Sponsor form (click here to go to), and explains the program. There are 4 levels of support for the corporate sponsorship, each giving the sponsor great access for their business to our fabulous Jewell Community of over 580 students, plus staff and parents. This is a huge selling point when asking for support, each level allows for certain access of their name (and often logo) to our community, via the website, newsletters, banners at the school and more. Corporate sponsor donations in the past have covered all costs associated with holding the carnival, which is a huge benefit.

If businesses cannot sponsor with money, we are holding our Raffle/Auction again this year, and they can donate goods or services. The other two links are a Raffle/Silent Auction Donation letter (click here) & separate donation receipt (click here), and you can print off and circulate to businesses you frequent, or are involved with.

The classroom baskets will be given away in both a raffle as well as silent auction - the same as last year. It was wonderful to see so much participation from all members of our community with the raffle - and was a successful fundraiser as well. SO, don't hold back when asking for donations! Ask for the moon, and we'll find a way to auction it off!

Deadline for both Corporate Sponsorships and Raffle/Auction Items is FEBRUARY 11th. Thanks!

The Carnival Committee

Family Access Network Giving Tree

PTA is pleased to help with this year's
Holiday Giving Tree,
a benefit for Jewell's own

Family Access Network
(also known as FAN)
Helping children and families in need find help for basic needs.

The Giving Tree will be set up in the lobby at the school the week before Thanksgiving, and will be stocked by PTA volunteers with "ornament" wishes through Wednesday December 22nd. In order for distribution of the donations to run as smoothly as possible, ornaments available during the last week will be requesting mainly gift certificates and food cards... please try to get the games and toy ornaments earlier than later. Thank you!

Here are some important notes about the ornament wishes and donations:

Please, UNWRAPPED gifts only. Gifts that are wrapped, will have to be unwrapped before distribution. However, GIFT BAGS are acceptable... as long as the gift items are available for review.

Donations of gift wrap & supplies are welcome.

Food card donations in any denomination are welcome.

Here are a few additional items to consider for donation as well:
batteries
bath supplies
Chapstick or Blistex lip balms (the winter produces lots of chaffed skin/lips for the kids as they walk home)
Food certificates
Misc. certificates/gift cards of any denomination
Movie passes, perhaps? Most often families in need do not go to the movies. It's far too expensive.

We look forward to seeing all of you at our next PTA Meeting, on October 14th at 6pm in the media center. School aged child care is available - it might be helpful to send your child with a snack, as most of the kiddos seemed hungry.

I'm very excited to announce this month's program - our speaker will be Claire Gibson.

Claire, in addition to being an incredible second grade teacher at Jewell, is one of our main district math trainers this year. She was also one of our Jewell representatives as we reviewed math programs that were available and helped select Bridges as our new adoption.

Claire will talk with parents about the new Bridges math program. She will share features of the new program, math standards, teacher training, and will answer questions parents have about the new program.

We look forward to seeing you there!

Today, we kick off our Fall PTA fundraiser! Our school benefits from 50% of these sales!

Your students are bringing home a packet with an Entertainment book inside. We want parents to assist their children in selling books. We do not want students to sell to people that they do not know. The more books your child sells, the more prizes they can earn. Keep in mind that you can order out of town books for relatives or friends who do not live in Oregon. There is a Portland edition available as well.

You can also order books online, and have them sent directly to out of town family/friends, CLICK HERE to be taken directly to the Entertainment Book website, where you can complete your order, and the credit will go directly to Jewell. Thanks!

The book that is coming home is a copy that can be used to show potential buyers the benefits of this year’s Entertainment Book. It is not a free sample, and any unsold books must returned by the end of the sale, Monday, September, 27th.

One thing to note, There is only one other school selling Entertainment Books in town, and it is much smaller than Jewell - so there will not be much saturation in Bend... Don't be afraid to sell all over town!

This is an exciting year, as we are changing the format of our meetings slightly. We will lead off with a short presentation about various school topics, and then hold our PTA business afterwards. Thursday's topic is:

Meeting Your Child's Learning Needs at Jewell!

Award-winning Principal Bruce Reynolds will share how Jewell has systems in place to meet the individual learning needs of all children. Learn about the school schedule, workshop groups, and how staff reviews data to make important decisions about your child's learning.

Another change to our meeting format is that Title 1 Parent Involvement funds are allowing us to staff a classroom with a Teacher's Aid for school-aged child care. Students are welcome to bring homework or reading assignments.

I'm so pleased to announce the results from our two recent fundraisers!

Pappy's Pizza Night was really fun - it was great to see so many Jewell faces out having fun in the community! Thanks to all of you, Pappy's was able to share over $775 dollars with Jewell PTA! Thanks, Pappy's!

The Otis Spunkmeyer Cookie Dough sale was a success! Many thanks to cookie-queen Jeannie Wheeler for doing such a great job with this! Thanks to her efforts, Jewell was able to sell $12,255 dollars worth of cookie dough - and Jewell PTA gets to put well over $6,000 towards our Jewell programs!

The product will be delivered during the week of May 10th - and the specific date will be announced as soon as we know it, so you can plan your pick-up accordingly!

Since we have to order in round cases, there will be some additional product available for purchase at delivery - and further details will be available as we know more!

And now for the news the students have been waiting for!

Let's take FULL advantage of Pappy's generosity, and try to not only come in for dinner, but encourage everyone you know to visit Pappy's for lunch! WE GOT CAKES!

A big thank you to everyone who donated cakes and goodies for our cake walk! And to whomever donated the ginormous Costco chocolate cake (that could probably feed 20) for the event, my son is eternally grateful (he was lucky enough to be the first winner - and the giant chocolate cake was the obvious choice!).

The carnival was a great success, thanks to the many volunteers and organizers who worked very hard to make it not only a FUN and safe event for our students and their friends/siblings, but also a successful fundraiser!

If you are unable to bring or send a cake, but still wish to contribute, PTA will make a “cake run” on the day of the carnival with any funds raised.

Simply put cash or a check (payable to Jewell PTA) in an envelope marked “Cake Walk Fund,” give to your teacher and we’ll do the rest - Thank you!

Fundraising efforts pay off in technology!

As most of you have heard, the 4th grade grant that was awarded late last year, allowed the school the opportunity to purchase laptops at an even greater education discount than usual.

The PTA took advantage of this special purchase and was able to purchase 15 new laptop computers for our mobile Cart on Wheels! We are very excited to have been able to replace the laptops currently in use that are nearly out of commission. The older laptops will be placed in circulation around the school and will be well utilized until they are completely out of working order.

We were allowed to make this purchase, of course, due to all of YOUR diligent fundraising efforts of the the last year. Please share this news with your students as well.

 Do you have a boss, or are you a business owner? Grab a Carnival Corporate Sponsor packet from the office (or get information from the PTA website) and ask your boss (or yourself) to help support our school. There are 4 levels of support – businesses of all size can participate.

 After Christmas Bargain Hunters? Keep your eyes out for bargains and deals on items you might wish to donate to our raffle/auction at the carnival! Check with your student’s teachers about a theme for your classroom basket

Keep your eyes peeled! There are many ways to be involved, it takes lots of help to make this happen! The best thing you can do is keep your eyes out for opportunities to volunteer. Such as:

Wild Rumpus Begins!

Last Wednesday was the first of 3 RIF (Reading is Fundamental) giveaways. Each student got to pick a brand new book for their very own. Books stayed at school until Friday (today), when a school-wide 20 minute read-in is scheduled!

Students are celebrating with Wild Hair day... in honor of the theme, Let the Wild Rumpus Begin - from Maurice Sendak's popular book, "Where the Wild Things Are."

RIF is funded by our PTA funds, with a matching government grant. Thanks to all of you parents, staff and students for your fundraising efforts... without which, programs such as this wouldn't be possible!

Jewell Elementary's Giving Tree

Holiday Giving Tree,
a benefit for Jewell's own

Family Access Network
(also known as FAN)
Helping children and families in need find help for basic needs.

The Giving Tree will be set up in the lobby at the school the week before Thanksgiving, and will be stocked by PTA volunteers with "ornament" wishes through Friday, December 18th. In order for distribution of the donations to run as smoothly as possible, ornaments available during the last week will be requesting mainly gift certificates and food cards... please try to get the games and toy ornaments earlier than later. Thank you!

Here are some important notes about the ornament wishes and donations:

Please, UNWRAPPED gifts only. Gifts that are wrapped, will have to be unwrapped before distribution. However, GIFT BAGS are acceptable... as long as the gift items are available for review.

Donations of gift wrap & supplies are welcome.

Food card donations in any denomination are welcome.

Here are a few additional items to consider for donation as well:
batteries
bath supplies
Chapstick or Blistex lip balms (the winter produces lots of chaffed skin/lips for the kids as they walk home)
Food certificates
Misc. certificates/gift cards of any denomination
Movie passes, perhaps? Most often families in need do not go to the movies. It's far too expensive.

Barnes & Noble Fundraising Opportunity

Barnes and Noble bookstore has a great opportunity for our school to raise some money outside of our Jewell community by gift wrapping books after they are purchased at the store.

Barnes and Noble is supplying all the wrap and tape, we just need to provide the volunteers and a jar for donations.

This is a fun and easy event so please sign up to help for an hour or two. We are required to man the table with two adults at all times.

We'll be holding a classroom contest for Box Top collections, with an October 16th deadline. The winning classroom will get a pizza party!

Fill up collection sheets (available from your teachers, at the front office, or online here - use the pages with 20 box tops on them) and turn them in to your teachers!

Please check the expiration dates... as we cannot submit expired tops. Thanks!

Today we are kicking off a PTA fundraiser to raise money to support our Artist in Residence Program.

Our school benefits from 50% of these sales!

Your students brought home a packet with an Entertainment Book inside yesterday. We want parents to assist their children in selling books. We do not want students to sell to people that they do not know. The more books your child sells, the more prizes they can earn.

The book that is coming home is a copy that can be used to show potential buyers the benefits of this year’s Entertainment Book. Take orders, collect the money, and keep track of the sales in the collection envelope included in the packet. Return any sales and money to the office when you are done selling, and we'll get the books out to you as soon as we can!

Jewell is one of very few schools selling these books in the Bend area, so don't feel like you can't go all over Bend to sell to friends and family.

Bend-La Pine Schools Names Kelly Beaudry Teacher of the Year - Bruce Reynolds Distinguished Administrator

This morning, before more than 1,000 of their peers, two Bend-La Pine Schools leaders were honored for their commitment to education. La Pine Middle School sixth grade teacher, Kelly Beaudry, was named 2009 Teacher of the Year, while R.E. Jewell Principal Bruce Reynolds was named Distinguished Administrator of the Year.

Beaudry has worked in education for 14 years, both in the classroom and in educational programming capacities. Most recently, Beaudry has been engaging students in innovative learning at La Pine Middle School.

"She is known as the "Smart Board Lady" for her leadership in applying smart board and individual student response system technology to integrated instruction for students in her classroom," said Superintendent Ron Wilkinson. "She has emerged as a leader at her school for her innovative instructional strategies and her devotion to using technology, wherever possible, to enhance her curriculum."

Her principal, Pat Yaeger, agrees, "She does not allow students to not succeed. Failure is not an option - Kelly does whatever it takes to ensure her students meet and exceed their potential."

"I believe that because I have very high expectations for my students, they learn to rise to the challenge of becoming the best they can be," said Beaudry. " That is what drives my planning and teaching for every student - striving to find a way to help each student do his or her very best."

Beaudry was one of 24 Bend-La Pine Schools teachers honored by the Greater Bend Rotary with Excellence in Education awards during the 2008-09 school year.

Distinguished Administrator Bruce Reynolds was hired by Bend-La Pine schools 32 years ago as a classroom teacher at Kenwood School and has been an instructional leader ever since.

Thanks to Reynold's leadership, RE Jewell Elementary School was recognized in May by State Superintendent of Public Education Susan Castillo, as a "Champion School" in Oregon's Celebrating Student Success program.

"Bruce has met or exceeded all of the administrative performance standards and goals of the Bend-La Pine Schools," said Bend-La Pine Schools retired Chief Academic Officer for Elementary Education Pat Echanis. "R.E. Jewell continues to make academic gains and it takes strong leadership for that to happen."

"The prestigious award that Jewell received would not have been possible without Bruce's clear vision for school improvement, his attention to data as it relates to educational decisions, and his courage to lead," Echanis adds.

Beaudry and Reynolds received $500 Professional Development Grants, sponsored by Mid Oregon Credit Union and Beecher Carlson.

Beaudry and Reynolds will vie for the honor of Oregon Teacher of the Year and Oregon Principal of the Year this fall.

It was great to see all of the Jewell faces again this evening at the Back to School night! We're looking forward to a FANTASTIC year, and THANKS to all of you who signed up for PTA tonight!

We are running an Early Bird Membership drive, with a special rate if you sign up and pay before our first meeting on Thursday, September 17th (at Boston's Restaurant, 6:30pm). You can find the forms at the front office.

Keep in mind that signing up doesn't obligate you to 50 hours of community service a week... it just means you're willing to help when and where you can! We'd love to get to know you, and count you in for PTA activities.

Drink Pouch Brigade - Save those Capri Suns!

Jewell is, indeed participating in TerraCycle's Drink Pouch Brigade... an effort to keep the drink pouches out of landfills, while earning money for Jewell at the same time (that's $0.02 PER POUCH!).

Stay tuned, as we are in the process of developing the program!

In the mean time, save those pouches, and here's the BEST way to do so:
1. Remove the straw.
2. Be sure it is empty.
3. Rinse off any juice residue.
4. Let dry out as best you can.
5. Spread the word!

First Graders take Field Trip!

It was a beautiful day for a field trip, particularly one as fun as the Central Oregon Pumpkin Patch. Everyone had a great time doing all of the activities, including navigating the corn maze, story time and a zoo train! Book Fair & Family Fun Night

Our annual Family Fun Night and Book Fair will be held on Thursday, November 6th, from 5:30 p.m.-7:30 p.m. This year in addition to pizza and drinks, there will be some special entertainment for everyone, and some activities for students. The Scholastic Book Fair will be held in the media center, while other activities will be held in the gym. We hope you can join us!
